No Command Line Switches In IE 7.0 (Internet Explorer)?
I did a write up about Firefox Command Line Opens Multiple Sites. I got interested if ever I can do the same with IE7. My search did not yield any positive result. Normally IE have command line options during installation only. Though quiet strange I stumble upon IE 4.0 version command line switches.
Here’s the list of options available:
-channelband Internet Explorer as a Desktop Toolbar, displaying the
Channels Directory of the currently logged on user. This
option only applies when Active Desktop is off.-e Launch Internet Explorer in Explorer mode (standard two
pane view, My Computer on left, Content on right)-new Start up Internet Explorer in a separate process.
-nohome Open Internet Explorer and don’t open any Web page at all.
-k Launch Internet Explorer in Kiosk mode.
Actually only the last two (2) switches work there on IE7.
-nohome switch looks like:
which is of little or no use at all.
-k switch is kiosk mode:
this one is pretty good at first that I could not see a toolbar to navigate but after trying some few standard shortcut keys I’ve noticed that every shortcut works just the same. Ctrl+F still opens Find box, Ctrl+B opens the Organize Favorites windows, Ctrl+H opens the history window, Ctrl+L opens the Open dialog box for searching web address or documents on folder but the odd one is Ctrl+N which opens a new browser window with full toolbars, menu and everything. I thought it would open a new IE instance with the same kiosk mode.
All I could say is it seems that IE7 is not ready yet with command line switches but maybe in the future it can include. As Kristen Kibble – Program Manager for IE Community put it in an interview.
Kristen [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Firefox provides the ability to launch the browser and open several tabs simultaneously through the command line: In the above example a new Firefox window will open with 3 tabs going to ebay, microsoft and google. Will IE7 have this ability?firefox.exe -new-window “www.ebay.com|www.microsoft.com|www.google.com”
A: Correction: IE7 does not currently do this, however we are aware of the customer request for the functionality and are considering it for future releases. - Internet Explore (October 12, 2006)
Hope to see it in the future.
