Six months ago I started techxplore.net as a site for me to share the things that I encounter at work or at play with the internet. It facinates me how certain sites get a high PageRank (PR) or a high Alexa Rank. I have searched the net on topics about SEO. I applied little by little those insights that I got to my only blog. My sites PR was like N/A for three months and on the succeeding months it stayed at PR 0. My sites Alexa Rank was more than seven million (7,000,000) in the beginning but it was steadily increasing unlike my PR. I was thinking all along that I’ve been doing something wrong since there’s no PR for my site for a long time. Other sites have PR 2 already after three months.

Today it’s a different story. Google somehow made an update today. It was my sister dazeee who broke news that www.techxplore.net got PR 5. I just could not believe the news at first. Currently my sites Alexa Rank stand at around 681,889.

Here is a definition of Google’s PageRank (PR) system:

PageRank is a link analysis algorithm that assigns a numerical weighting to each element of a hyperlinked set of documents, such as the World Wide Web, with the purpose of “measuring” its relative importance within the set. - wikipedia

Here is Alexa’s web traffic ranking definition:

Alexa computes traffic rankings by analyzing the Web usage of millions of Alexa Toolbar users. The information is sorted, sifted, anonymized, counted, and computed, until, finally, we get the traffic rankings shown in the Alexa service. - Alexa

The experience shows that basic principles of SEO do affect PR and Alexa Rank. As one comment on the post I have about Analyze Meta Tags for Higher Search Engine Results Page Rankings says:

I do agree with the comment. In the end content is still the king. Keep on learning and applying SEO for in the end it pays off in increasing your PageRank and Alexa Rank performance.
