gOS Touted as Google Operating System
The battle on the desktop arena by Microsoft and Linux systems comes to a new height. It’s a brave move by a Los Angeles based company Everex to join the desktop area. Everex manufactures low-priced and energy-efficient PC’s known as gPC. Some people are touting it to be a Google PC as it comes packed with Google applications that are internet based which works similar to the Microsoft Office suite. It’s known also as a green PC as it consumes less power compared to it’s contemporaries. I am interested more on the rising popularity of gPC. Some calls the prefix “g” in gPC or gOS as “google” or “green”.
The operating system is based on Ubuntu 7.10 Linux system with an Enlightenment theme. Everex made a good choice, as Ubuntu is the most promising Linux distribution which have gained user acceptance in the desktop area. The concept is to have all applications run on the net if possible. Google apps for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, mail, calendar and more are accessible using firefox browser. Don’t worry it comes still with open office 2.2, firefox and all other Linux favorite apps.
Try the new operating system for gPC could be downloaded from the official gOS site http://thinkgos.com. Everything works right out of the box. Value added it’s all open source.
