Complete Advanced Technology in Global Positioning System
The institute of higher learning that I work with has a fleet of vehicles. We haven’t got yet I suppose a Global Positioning System (GPS) to track all the vehicles. When we have trips we sign a paper to log the time start and end and also the distance traveled as recorded in the vehicles odometer.
I have learned of a company GPS Insight that provides GPS related hardware and software. Every vehicle could be provided with a GPS map which also can be interfaced using Google Earth.
The GPS can generate a specific car’s driving activity for a whole day; how many times it’s on the move, idle or totally stopped. This is very interesting even the when the car was turned on and off. The location of the car can be tracked and at what speed it’s running.
A detailed daily report to show the total work time for a driver and where did he perform the driving task at what time.
Report about using the vehicle after authorized time and trips can be generated this is to identify violations of unauthorized use of the vehicle.
I could remember there are signs printed on company vehicle like “How’s my driving? Please report reckless driving to Telephone No. 1233456”. But with this fleet managers could actually monitor who among the drivers have committed speed violations by looking on a speed report.
Vehicles need to have service checks regularly. Properly knowing how long have a vehicle stayed on a service shop is vital. Service shops are noted as landmarks and reports could be made how many vehicles went there on what day and for how long.
Another good thing is with GPS the whole vehicle movement could be monitored within a prescribed area called geofence. Reports on how many times the vehicle get’s in or out of the boundary can be viewed by the fleet manager. This is useful for tracking which vehicles that goes out of route.
Maintenance plays a great deal in managing a fleet of vehicles and it’s important to keep track. The GPS Insight has this capability to generate report about vehicle maintenance schedules. This is important especially for engine maintenance. Alerts can be sent on email on which one’s are due for maintenance.
Fleet managers could use a real time snapshot of where the vehicles are via a fleet location report. This is useful for deciding which vehicles to dispatch on a certain location call.
One important aspect is the capability to generate reports on vehicles fuel consumption. This is useful for tracking vehicles that are out of the standard miles per gallon consumption (MPG) for a particular distance.
An engine performance report showing the times that the vehicle is speeding and idling can be generated. This is also useful for viewing historical data of speed ranges.
A comprehensive support page is provided for the usual concerns about the software usage. GPS Insight is a fabulous product for tracking and managing a whole fleet of company owned vehicles. A solution for all most all problems related to running a fleet of vehicle.

nice post yoeeee! you’ve explained well about GPS. I think it’s a very useful technology for taxi companies.
December 1st, 2007 at 11:21 pmyup, it’s really good to have GPS and with the integration of google maps the geographic scope will be come wider.
