In the old times when computers have this bulky screens we might need screensavers. If we have the CRT or Cathode Ray Tube display for our computer then it’s important to use screensavers. Running a phosphor-based display like CRT with the same non-moving image on the screen for more than an hour would burn in the phosphor. This will make a permanent ghost like image of the object on the screen. Liquid Crystal Displays or LCD’s on the other hand don’t suffer this kind of phenomena as they don’t have phosphor burning in the display. LCD’s some might think to suffer the same problem but this are temporary. This might be appropriately called as page impressions and not as burn ins.

Screensavers are becoming more sophisticated using programming techniques that use the latest Graphics Device Interface (GDI), DirectX, or OpenGL technologies. Thus we have a number of photo realistic or even live real time free screensavers from weather satellite feeds. Many also have created fancy screensavers of nature like Aquarium Screensavers to something as dazzling as the winter season’s view like Winter Screensavers. The possibilities with screensavers are limitless as to what can be showed on the screen. Creative photos or videos can also be made as screensavers.

The purpose is to certainly save the screen primarily for CRT displays and also to entertain someone when the computer is on idle state. Both LCD and CRT computer display can for sure benefit from screensavers. It’s also nice to have them on your display.
