Water Supply Control Technology
Water is an important resource. Some people believe that it’s renewable, while others consider it as a fast depleting resource like oil. In our campus the water that we have is regulated by the governments Provincial Water Authority. Sometime we get some water advisory through the residents mailing list regarding the supply of water such as below:
[Residents] Water Advisory
The Provincial Water Authority has not yet restored back the normal supply of water. Hence, we will continue to provide water at low pressure to the academic and residential areas. However, supply will have to be completely cut from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. to allow for the pumping of water to the water tanks.
We advise the residents to store water if they could and everyone to conserve water usage. For the next coming days, we will send you updates on the condition of our water supply. We apologize for the inconvenience and hope for your understanding and cooperation.
Infrastructure
Water supply systems are a complex network of water pipes that has a series of flow switch to control distribution of water. There are sensors that feed data to computers to monitor the over all water distribution systems. The sensors also help control unusual loss of water pressure due to leakage.
In the campus we have a big water tank which is used to store water during irregular supply of water from the Provincial Water Authority. The water tank is being pumped with water through an electric water pump which is automatically controlled by a liquid level switch. There are also water tanks that use a different type of water level control which uses float switch technology. One of the major cause of water wastage is water over flowing from tanks. The use of advanced technology switches in controlling water supply can help prevent this problem.
