Disable Add-On Compatibility Check On FireFox 3.0
FireFox is for me the best Internet browser due to the extensibility feature. I could customize FireFox the way I want it. Meaning with the use of FireFox Add-ons the possibility of customization is unlimited. Some of the extensions for FireFox have come dear to me. Thus, when there is a new upgrade of the browser, I yearn to have those extensions up and running.
We are not in a perfect world, sometimes the FireFox extension module are updated late by its developers whenever they are not busy. Running your favorite add-on requires a little of changing some settings on the FireFox browser configuration. The way to do it is through disabling the compatibility checking. Though this might not work all the time, but I find it to work on some FireFox add-ons that are not that really old.
Steps on disabling FireFox compatibility checking:
- open the configuration by typing about:config in the Firefox browser navigation bar or address bar
- right click on the list and create a boolean extensions.checkCompatibility option
- set the value to false
- restart the browser
After doing the changes most of the extensions should work. Opening the Add-ons dialog will prompt a warning message suggesting to enable compatibility check. Just ignore the prompt button.
Extensions that are incompatible will now be shown with an exclamation mark. You can now start installing your favorite FireFox add-on, but some really old extension might not work and might even cause hang up of the browser. A temporary solution until the extension would have an upgrade release from the developer.
