Windows XP Desktop Icons Adjust Size And Spacing

A working desktop should be a clutter free area. One will be seeing only occasional things on the desktop which are very important and not for long. In my experience this is not always the case. In my office working computer, I like 10 or more icons on my Windows desktop.

I spend time trying to make everything tidy by arranging the icons to have more space in the desktop. Still, there’s a bunch of clutter. One solution I guess is to shrink the icons and space them closely. Dragging and dropping the icons side by side just would not help. How will I gonna do this? Here’s what I did to make the icons shrink and move them close to each other.

Adjusting Desktop Icon Size:

  • right click on free windows desktop area
  • click Properties on the pop up menu
  • click Appearance tab on the Display Properties window
  • click Advance button
  • select Icon from the Item drop down list of the Advanced Appearance window
  • change the default value of 32 px icon size to something like 25 px or any desired size

The steps are similar to the above in Adjusting Desktop Icon Spacing:

  • right click on free windows desktop area
  • click Properties on the pop up menu
  • click Appearance tab on the Display Properties window
  • click Advance button
  • for changing horizontal spacing, select Icon Spacing (Horizontal) from the Item drop down list of the Advanced Appearance window
  • change the default value of 43 px icon size to something like 35 px or any desired size
  • for changing vertical spacing, select Icon Spacing (Vertical) from the Item drop down list of the Advanced Appearance window
  • change the default value of 43 px icon size to something like 35 px or any desired size

Definitely there’s now more white space in my Windows XP desktop. A treat to myself for making things a bit tidier on my desktop.
