Computer Aided Detection of Early Stage Lung Cancer

In medical field computer technology has made great improvements. Cancer treatment is an area where computer has helped in the process. I have read for example about a way to detect lung cancer or Mesothelioma cancer with the aid of a computer.

The Computer Aided Detection (CAD) method could help radiologists identify cancerous lung nodules at an early stage. The University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore has performed a study which identified nodules that were not detected during time of interpretation but were determined to be lung cancers. In cases like this, CAD software was used on the overlooked nodules and it found missed nodules by about 44%-55%. The CAD software result implies that it’s possible to miss out some nodules representing lung cancer using conventional methods. The CAD software is a useful tool in highlighting abnormalities that could be overlooked during initial search by radiologist.

Including the use of Computer Aided Detection (CAD) Software in the standard procedure of evaluating lung nodules would enhance detection of cancer at an early stage. Thereby, increasing the survival rate to more than 70% of cancer patients.
