Dell PowerEdge 1600SC Continuous Beeping
Helpdesk support have called to inform that Dell PowerEdge 1600SC MySQL database and web hosting server was having continuous beep. It’s definitely an alert for something wrong with the computer server. I checked remotely the server status and it seems all is working fine. The web site hosted and other web application are all working without any problem. The computer fans are all running normal.
It’s puzzling whenever something like this happens as you just don’t know why the alert has been triggered. So, I went to the computer server room and do a check. I’ve found out that one of the RAID 5 disk drive led lights up orange while others are yellow. This explains the beeping alert sound. The next question is how to fix this beeping sound. Since, it’s a RAID 5 it would be safe to remove one defective hard disk on the bay. I was hoping that the beeping will stop when the defective disk is pulled out.
This did not help. I guess replacement of the IBM @server xSeries 36.4 GB USCSI 15K rpm hard disk would fix it. Since, we don’t have a spare SCSI disk similar to the one being use it would take time to order. The beeping alert is deafening. I tried to DISABLE the BIOS speaker, but this did not help either.
I have tried installing the Dell OpenManage Server Administrator Software, hoping to find some things to control RAID disk alert, but could not find anything. There’s another software called Dell OpenManage Storage Management which will allow management of RAID disk and configuration of it’s alert. This is my last hope in stopping the beeping sound.

You can “Silence” the alarm in the PERC/4 config utility. This tool can be accessed during server bootup.
