Windows Server 2008 RAID Data Backup Solution
A new computer server arrived at work, which is for running web application and database back end. It came with a 500GB single SATA hard disk. The problem at hand is how to have some sort of fault tolerance. The option might be to buy a hardware RAID controller which will cost a lot of money. Another option would be to configure a software RAID through Windows disk management.
Usually we use some hardware RAID controller for configuring our data backup solution. The limited office budget has forced consideration of using the built-in Windows Server 2008 disk management for setting up software RAID. There are concerns though about the reliability of Windows Server 2008 software RAID.
Questions have come to mind about cases where clean installation of Windows Server 2008 is required. Will the new installation be able to read data of the software RAID or not? A major reason why most system administrators discourage the use of software RAID due to the loss of data.
A hardware RAID is highly recommended for a data backup solution due to reliability. A redundancy safety factor with hardware RAID would keep your data safe for both hardware or software failures.
